The Stephen Colbert election special last went down in history as what Variety called “the late-night equivalent of a wake,” as the cast of jokes about the ridiculousness of the Trump campaign came to the conclusion that it had just won. However, the host of the Late Show decided to shoot another one-hour special for Showtime, as the results of the 2020 showdown between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are now available.
The catchy show, with the catchy title Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020: The Last Stand of Democracy: Building Back America Great Again Better 2020, will be aired on Showtime on Tuesday, November 3 at 23:00 ET / PT and will run for one hour. In 2016, this was the same hour that Florida was called to Trump, which actually caused wheezing in the studio, but it remains to be seen whether something as dramatic as this will happen during the hour.
The Election Night Special will then be available on call on Showtime from Wednesday, November 4.
For both the live stream and the catch-up service, users must have a Showtime account. The streaming channel costs $10.99 per month or $99 per year – although the annual price is only available to those who register via Showtime.com. Apple TV+ users can also get Showtime and CBS All Access together for $9.99 per month.
New Showtime users will receive a free 30-day trial of the channel so they can watch not only the Stephen Colbert Election Night Special, but also other Showtime shows such as Shameless, Billions and the latest drama about the 2016 Trump election and its aftermath, The Comey Rule, with Brendan Gleeson as President.
The official summary of the Showtime election special on the election of Stephen Colbert is: “Join Emmy and Peabody Award winning host Stephen Colbert as he returns to Showtime to host another election night special. Live from his virtual underground political bunker, Stephen Colbert will react in real time as the results of the individual states are evaluated.
“Guests include Charlamagne Tha God and presenters Alex Wagner, John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon of The Circus. It’s going to be a great evening, although my therapist has reminded me that America must WANT to change,” says Colbert.
Talking to the Hollywood reporter The Last Show podcast with Stephen Colbert, Showrunner Chris Licht said about the upcoming Showtime special: “While we went into the night four years ago and thought we knew pretty much what was going to happen, there is no poll, no expert, no forecaster – absolutely no one can convince us that we know what’s going to happen on this election night. We are prepared for every eventuality. I am cautiously optimistic that we are prepared, and this reduces the level of fear that we didn’t feel last time, but which we should have”.
However, the special is not the only Colbert-related election program that will air on November 3. The Late Show will also host a 12-hour pre-show entitled “A Late Show’s Pre-Show”: In Hope of the Best…. This special can be viewed free of charge on the Late Show’s YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages from 11:00 to 23:00 ET.
