In recent months, many people have cancelled their appointments with specialists for fear of infection with the coronavirus. However, reliable treatment is particularly important in the case of heart disease, in order to avoid a deterioration in the state of health and dangerous secondary diseases. If, for example, the cardiac arrhythmia atrial fibrillation is not detected and treated appropriately, the risk of a stroke increases considerably. The German Senior Citizens’ League has summarized the most important facts about this in a brochure and website.
Due to the increasing number of corona infections, many patients cancel important appointments with their specialist. Especially in the case of heart disease, therapy is very important to prevent a deterioration in health. The German Senior Citizens’ League (DSL) e.V. points this out in a current statement.
In the case of atrial fibrillation, the regulated process of tension and relaxation of the muscles in the atria is disturbed. This can lead to the blood in the heart chambers not being pumped on properly. The body cells may receive less oxygen; physical weakness, breathing difficulties and dizziness may be the consequences.
In the worst case, the blood may remain in the atria for too long and clump together. If such a blood clot gets into a brain-supplying vessel with the bloodstream, it can clog it, interrupt the blood supply and thus trigger a stroke. To prevent this, high-risk patients need medication for stroke prophylaxis. A high risk is when various factors come together, such as weak heart muscle, age over 65, high blood pressure or diabetes.

The updated brochure Atrial fibrillation – stroke risk lower explains the described connections and points treatment possibilities out as well as chances of a preventive life-style. The brochure can be requested in printed form free of charge or downloaded from the website as PDF. It was realized with the support of Pfizer Pharma GmbH.
