Mom Season 8 began by explaining exactly where Christy (played by Anna Faris) had gone after Faris announced in September that she was leaving the CBS comedy. Although the actor didn’t pick up her role again to give her character one last goodbye, Bonnie (Allison Janney) and Adam (William Fichtner) had a conversation in which they explained exactly what happened to Christy.
In Mom Season 8, Episode 1, now aired on the CBS website and app, we saw them driving home from the airport after dropping Christy off. Then it was revealed that Christy had won a seat in a lawsuit in Washington D.C.
Bonnie joked, “Every mother dreams of the day when she drops off her 42-year-old daughter at the airport to go to school… Georgetown Law School with a full scholarship? Whew! A lot of parents would be standing in a puddle of tears right now. Then, of course, both Adam and Bonnie delivered that puddle of tears.
Later in the episode, we got a glimpse of how the show is likely to deal with the fact that Christy will no longer be there from now on when Christy called her mother during Tammy’s (Kristen Johnston) birthday sleepover – although we only saw (and heard) Bonnie’s side of the call.
This was previously hinted at by Jill actor Jaime Pressly, who told the Us Weekly podcast: “We’re still talking about the character Christy. Bonnie, the character of Allison Janney, still talks to her on the phone and will pass on the things Christy does or says to us so that we feel like she’s still there.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mom show runner Gemma Baker was asked if she had ever considered killing Anna Faris’ character. “Although our show has killed characters in the past, we never considered this as an option for Christy,” she said, “Our audience kept their fingers crossed for her for seven seasons, and this loss felt like it was too devastating for her and our other characters.
“It was important to us that Christy move on to bigger things. Quite often, when people are in recovery, their lives become larger in ways they could not have imagined before. And so it will be for Christy.”
Faris announced that she would leave the fair in September with a statement in which she said she wanted to turn to new career opportunities. “While my journey as Christy has come to an end that allows me to pursue new opportunities, I will be watching the next season and keeping my fingers crossed for my television family,” her statement read in part.
Mom Season 8 will be broadcast on Thursdays at 21:00 ET / 20:00 CT on CBS….
