Law and Order: SVU returns this fall for a 22nd season, with Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) returning to solve more crimes on NBC. Although the premiere of the 22nd season was originally intended to reunite her with her former colleague Elliott Stabler (Christopher Meloni), this is no longer happening. However, there is still much for fans of the Special Victims Unit to experience when the show is broadcast on NBC and transmitted online.
When law and order: SVU season 22 begins
The premiere of SVU season 22 will be broadcast at 21.00 ET / 20.00 CT on NBC.
Originally planned for law and order: Special Victims Unit to spend a night with the new offshoot Law & Order: Organized crime, which was to be headed by former SVU star Christopher Meloni. This also meant that both shows were to meet in the fall.
However, since organized crime has now shifted to the year 2021, all plans for a transition have been postponed until then.
Instead of reuniting Benson and Stabler, SVU Season 22 will deal with the anti-police protests that arose after the murder of George Floyd. The summary for the premiere states: “In the season premiere, the troop’s efforts to solve an assault are hampered by its own blind spots and a community that is losing confidence in the police.
Showrunner Warren Leight elaborated on this in a TVLine interview: “In our season premiere ‘Watchmen and Gladiators’, our police officers come to a crime in Central Park where a black man has already been arrested.
“While the civilians record their every move on cell phones, the force makes a series of quick decisions that further antagonize an already angry community. Throughout the episode and season, we’ll be looking at how explicit and implicit bias shapes the criminal justice system, as well as how public scrutiny and anger and internal conflict affect our troops.
