Jeannie Mai, co-host of the syndicated daily talk show The Real and co-reporter for Holey Moley, announced this morning that she has danced her final steps onABC’s Dancing With the Stars and will leave the show with immediate effect. The reason for her abrupt departure was the diagnosis of an inflammatory disease called epiglottis, which requires immediate surgery.

Good Morning America was the first to report on their recent hospitalization and subsequent withdrawal from the hit dance competition with a May statement. It read: “My doctors discovered a health problem in my throat that requires immediate attention and surgery. It breaks my heart that my DWTS journey must end here”.

She added: “I have pushed myself to new physical and mental limits and I am so proud of how far we have come.

According to the Mayo Clinic, epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition that can lead to inflammation of the tissue in the trachea, blocking the flow of air into the lungs.

Her unexpected departure required some juggling by the show’s producers, as tonight was billed as “Double Elimination Night”, where two couples were to be sent home. However, a statement from DWTS confirmed that only one couple will now be eliminated tonight.

“Jeannie has inspired us, along with millions of fans, with her energy and dedication. We wish her a full and speedy recovery,” was the statement from Dancing With the Stars. “Since Jeannie had to withdraw from the competition, tonight’s show will feature the eight remaining couples and a single elimination.

Mai’s professional dancing partner Brandon Armstrong recorded a video message for Good Morning America, saying, “We are shocked at the news that we have to cancel this season, but Jeannie’s health comes first. Thanks to all the fans who have helped us get this far and we pray for a speedy recovery for Jeannie.

41-year-old Mai almost dropped out of the show last week during the “Night of the Villains”. Dressed as Hannibal Lector, she danced a Paso Doble with Armstrong to Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater”, which earned her 25 out of 30 points from the judges. This relatively weak performance of the pair put her in the last two places next to Cheer’s Monica Aldama and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy. The judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba finally decided to save Mai and sent Aldama home.

Also eliminated from the competition so far are Vernon Davis, Jesse Metcalfe, Anne Heche, Carole Baskin and Charles Oakley. Kaitlyn Bristowe, Skai Jackson, Justina Machado, AJ McLean, Nelly, Nev Schulman, Chrishell Stause and Johnny Weir are still in the running.

Dancing with the Stars will be broadcast Monday (20.00 ET) on ABC….
