The editors may have waited a little before they could turn the pages this afternoon. The social media had apparently failed earlier, as a message on their homepage shortly after 4 pm simply read “Increased error rates”.
At 5:03 pm, however, the page was available again and working, Reddit Status reported.

According to Down Detector, Reddit has received more than 18,000 reports that the site is not working today. More than half of the problems were reported by web browser users, while 45 percent of users had problems with the app and 2 percent had problems logging in.

The map on the website showed that Failure Clusters could be found in the United Kingdom as well as in a number of major US cities – Poston, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, Detroit, Tampa and Houston.
“Looking at the statistics, the time for a partial outage was 1 hour and 37 minutes, so I think Reddit will be down for about 2-3 hours, as it is a major outage,” speculated one user in Down Detector’s comments.
“Instagram and Reddit are both down now, wtf should I do at work now,” joked another, amidst panicked comments from other users, worried that the site is not working.
Others resorted to Twitter, responded to Reddit’s status and checked with others to see if they had the same downtime. “Is Reddit down?” many wrote. Some exchanged sad pictures and memes.

Someone passed on a screenshot he had taken of the website when it was unavailable; the picture shows the creature with the Reddit logo buried in arrows that remind of votes. “I haven’t seen this site for about 10 years,” they commented.

According to isitdownrightnow.com, several users reported errors in the CDN (Content Delivery Network), noting that they were told on the Reddit website: “Our CDN could not reach our servers”. Others reported that they had 503 errors, which means that the server was busy due to maintenance.
RedditStatus.com had already reported bugs on Saturday, which happened to occur shortly after the announcement of Joe Biden as President-Elect. These issues were investigated by Reddit and finally resolved by the evening.

On Wednesday at 4:10 pm Reddit said he was investigating the matter. At 4:51 pm Reddit reported: “A solution was found and we are monitoring the results.” Now it is likely that people will be able to scroll to their heart’s content again.
Washington Newsday contacted Reddit and received no comment at the time of publication….
