Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 returns to ABC this November, and the cast is more stable than in previous years. No big names have suddenly announced their resignations, as Justin Chambers did last year, and so far only one new cast member has been announced. However, the showrunner has hinted that some former stars might return for the 17th season.
Who will be joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy for season 17?
In Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Mackenzie Marsh will get a new face. She plays a new character named Val Ashton, who is described in a deadline article as “intelligent, humorous and fun-loving, but extremely lonely.
Previously, the actor has appeared in shows like Charmed, Will & Grace, American Housewife and The Following.
Who will return for Grey’s Anatomy Season 17?
Among those confirmed to return for another season of the medical ABC drama are the following:
Ellen Pompeo – Meredith Grey
Giacomo Gianniotti – Andrew DeLuca
Jesse Williams – Jackson Avery
Kelly McCreary – Maggie Pierce
Chandra Wilson – Miranda Bailey
Caterina Scorsone – Amelia shepherd
James Picken Jr. – Richard Webber
Kim Raver – Teddy Altman
Camilla Luddington – Jo Karev
Kevin McKidd – Owen Hunt
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy will also see more of Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu and Richard Flood as Cormac Hayes, as both have risen to the role of series regulars.
Showrunner Krista Vernoff has also hinted that a former cast member like Sandra Oh, Sarah Drew or Kate Walsh might follow Katherine Heigl last season and reappear surprisingly in the latest season.
She told Entertainment Tonight: “It’s an ongoing endeavor, and if I can make it happen, it will be exciting… And if I can’t make it happen, then we have other exciting things to do.
Who’s leaving Grey’s Anatomy?
Season 17 will be the first season of Grey’s Anatomy without Justin Chambers as Dr. Alex Karev. The actor unexpectedly left the show in January 2020 after publishing a statement saying that he “hopes to diversify my acting roles and career choices.
This clearly caused some problems for the show. Show runner Krista Vernoff was asked by The Hollywood Reporter what had happened and how much attention had been paid to her, and said “I refuse to comment” and “I don’t want to talk about it”.
In the season 16 finale it was revealed that Dr. Karev had been reunited with his ex-partner Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl, who surprisingly returned to Grey’s).
This means that only three members of the original main cast remain: James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber), Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey and Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Grey. Pompeo has previously made a series of statements in which she said that she is about to leave the show – and creator Shonda Rhimes said that if Pompeo leaves, the show is over.
So it remains to be seen if season 17 will be the last season of Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 starts on Thursday, November 12 at 21:00 ET / 20:00 CT on ABC….
