During Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) was seen mostly unconscious since her collapse in the hospital parking lot at the premiere of the medical ABC drama. Originally, this seemed to be just a way to bring Patrick Dempsey back as McDreamy (or should that be “Dream McDreamy”), but ABC is about to air Episode 4, and she still hasn’t woken up.
Actually, the promo of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Episode 4 seemed to suggest that Meredith’s condition is worse than ever. In this trailer, released at the end of the last episode, we hear Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) say, “Meredith is not getting better… you can’t wake her up”. The narrator then says, “Meredith’s life is hanging by a thread.
Fans now wonder if the show is preparing to do the unthinkable and kill Meredith Grey in episode 5, which airs on Thursday, December 3. Although the character has had many encounters with death over the past 17 seasons (this is not even her first coma), Pompeo’s recent comments should be of particular concern to fans.
In Variety in October, the actor said: “We do not know yet when the show will really end. But the truth is that it could be this year. I mean, this is the last year of my contract at the moment. I don’t know that this is the last year, but it could very well be.
However, the fact that Meredith is in a coma so early in the season probably means that she’ll be fine in the end. After all, Grey’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, had said that the series would end when Pompeo wanted to leave, and a) there was no announcement that the series would end, and b) the fans will probably be very unhappy to see Meredith just sleeping until she dies in the last episodes of the series.
Also, in typical Grey’s Anatomy manner, a love triangle is underway in which Meredith must eventually wake up to be a part of it. In a conversation with TVLine about the triangle between Meredith, DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood), Vernoff said: “I don’t know if I believe that DeLuca is ascending to a dark and intricate level of life experience that somehow makes him a [reasonably]mature partner for Meredith. Or whether all that Hayes has gone through in his life already makes him her equal. I am delighted to have such an enigma”.
In fact, Meredith’s near-death experience could actually be another part of this plot. DeLuca is currently nursing her back to health, and nothing will spark her love more than if he can literally bring her back to life.
But while Meredith is in her unconscious state, the series takes the opportunity to bring back another dead character. The trailer for The Grey’s Season 17, Episode 5 ended with “another person returning from her past. Fans, however, must turn on ABC to get the latest on Meredith’s health and see who this ghost from Grey’s past might be.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 is broadcast on Thursdays at 21:00 ET / 20:00 CT on ABC.
