At present, anyone who wants to train in a fitness studio is usually obliged to wear a mouth and nose cover. Many people now also wear a mask when jogging outdoors to protect themselves and others against infection with SARS-CoV-2. But what should be considered when choosing protective masks?

Choosing the right mask

You want your mask to fit properly and be comfortable and breathable, but you also want a seal around your nose and mouth? Then you are looking for a mask that fits tightly but allows you to breathe comfortably.

Several fitness brands have released face masks specifically designed for exercise that use moisture-wicking material or spandex. These materials feel lighter and are easier to breathe in. Be sure to wash your face mask after each workout or use a new one.

The physician recommends that you do not exercise with ventilated face masks, as they do not offer protection to anyone. Ventilated masks are designed to keep out dust particles when inhaled, but when exhaled, particles of the air you breathe and mucus particles can also escape.

If such symptoms occur, you may need to change your training, at least until you get used to sports with a face mask on. People who are very fit may not feel the effects of a face mask as much as those who have just started training.

Wearing a face mask will make training a little more difficult, but can be done safely. If you are exercising with a mask on, observe how you feel and watch for signs of drowsiness, dizziness and shortness of breath.
