A multiracial couple set the Internet on fire after photos of them posing together in a cotton field appeared online.
One series of photos that Twitter user @bandeauxpat shared on Tuesday showed a black man cuddling with a white woman as they stood between cotton twigs in a huge field. In one photo the couple seems to hug each other. In another they share a kiss while the woman wraps her hands around his neck, while in the third picture – which people in the social media really seemed to tick – the couple kiss while the man holds up a piece of cotton.
The identity of the couple was not revealed, nor was it immediately clear when the photos were taken or whether the pictures were part of an engagement shoot, as some people assumed.
The tweet has now become a virus and has received more than 275,000 likes and 34,000 retweets. Thousands of people also reacted to the photos, and of course they didn’t have the nicest things to say.
“Another black brother lost and confused smh,” wrote one person in response to the photos.

Many of the commentators were usually amazed that the mixed-race couple would take such photos in a cotton field, considering that cotton is widely associated with slavery. Before the abolition of slavery, black Americans were forced to pick cotton day after day without interruption, and even after slavery, black sharecroppers were recruited by white landowners to pick cotton for basic necessities.
“Picking cotton AND picking a white girl? Pick a fight,” twittered one person.

There were a few people who seemed to be on the couple’s side and didn’t understand why everyone was so outraged by the photo series.
“You see, I just saw it as a young couple on a pretty cotton field! I swear, nowadays everybody wants to be offended by everything…”, wrote one Twitter user.
Another wrote: “Am I really the only one who thinks this could be completely innocent, and they chose the place because it was aesthetic? Lmao ppl is always looking for something to criticize people.
