Politicians from various parties are calling for an early payment of Christmas bonuses to support stationary retail trade. This would take away the fear of a lockdown before Christmas, says CDU faction leader Baldauf.
In order to strengthen the retail trade and equalize Christmas shopping, several politicians are calling for Christmas bonus payments to be brought forward. “We must support the retail trade now. That’s why I’m appealing to companies to pay out the Christmas bonus already with the October salary,” said Rhineland-Palatinate CDU faction leader Christian Baldauf to the “Bild” newspaper on Saturday.
Then many people would be able to do their Christmas shopping in the next few weeks and retailers would then have “less to fear from a hopefully avoidable second lockdown before Christmas,” argued Baldauf, who is also the top candidate of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU for the 2021 state election.
The SPD member of parliament Florian Post expressed a similar view. Early Christmas bonus payments would relax the situation in the shopping zones during the Christmas business and would be a great help for the stationary retail trade, said Post “Bild”. FDP deputy faction leader Michael Theurer told the newspaper: “Before the whole thing ends up with anonymous online giants, it would be great if the companies that can still pay Christmas bonuses despite Corona would bring forward the payment of them”.
