Why Did ‘The Bold Type’ in Season 5 Make a Clever ‘Office’ Reference?
As Season 5 of The Bold Type draws to a close, it’s time to say goodbye to the show’s favorite characters. Despite the fact that the season is largely about tying up loose ends, the show found time in one episode to make a sly reference to The Office. So, what was the reference, and why did it make the cut?
Season 5 of ‘The Bold Type’ premiered in 2021.
The Bold Type premiered on Freeform in 2017. Jane Sloane, Kat Edison, and Sutton Brady, three women who met while working at Scarlet Magazine in New York City, star in the series. They encourage one another in their jobs, romances, and other endeavors as best friends.
Freeform announced in January 2021 that The Bold Type had been renewed for a fifth and final season. Season 5 debuted on May 26 and consisted of only six episodes. Sutton’s divorce from her husband, Kat’s reunion with her ex, and Jane’s pursuit of a relationship with a coworker are all key plotlines.

Though the show is mostly focused on Jane, Kat, and Sutton, other Scarlet employees are frequently featured. Melora Hardin’s character Jacqueline Carlyle is one of the most prominent. Jacqueline is editor-in-chief of the publication and acts as a mentor to the women, especially Jane.
Jacqueline and Jane had a talk in the office kitchen in Season 5, Episode 3, “Rolling Into the Future.” Jane is surprised to see Jacqueline there, as is Jacqueline’s assistant, Andrew, who is taken aback to find her “drinking company coffee out of an Office mug.” With a glance at the Dunder Mifflin logo, she tells him that everything is alright.
In ‘The Office,’ Melora Hardin portrayed Jan Levinson.
