It’s been more than 20 years since Trey Parker was nominated for an Oscar. At the 2000 Academy Awards, Parker and South Park co-creator Matt Stone made quite a scene when they arrived at the gala in dresses. Years later, Parker and Stone admitted they weren’t sober when they walked the red carpet and sat in the audience. Here’s the story of that night and their later revelations.
The big night of Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
Released in 1999, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut received a nomination for Best Song. “Blame Canada” was perhaps the only song from the musical that was even remotely broadcast-worthy, and they still had to bleep it when Robin Williams sang it live on the 2000 show. So as nominated guests, Parker and Stone satirized previous award show guests.
“South Park” co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone reveal why they mercilessly mocked Ben Affleck
At the beginning of the year, Jennifer Lopez wore a revealing green dress to the Grammys, with an open V across her chest. The year before, “Shakespeare in Love” winner Gwyneth Paltrow wore a pink dress to the Oscars. Parker and Stone recreated those looks.
Treasy Parker and Matt Stone got high to celebrate “South Park.”
Both Parker and Stone are not afraid of anything. Their age-rated film skewered the MPAA itself, and South Park sequels have taken aim at Scientology, Mel Gibson, Osama bin Laden, Terry Schiavo and once even Christopher Reeve. But they needed some chemical courage to pull off their Oscars looks.
“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone aren’t surprised these characters never took off
“We weren’t drunk at all,” Stone said in a 2005 interview for the DVD release of Team America: World Police. “We were on acid. That was the last time I did LSD, and we hadn’t done it for a couple of years before that, but that seemed like the right time to do it.”
Parker supported Stone.
“We were on acid that day,” Parker said. “And not taking it, because we don’t take much…. That was the last time I took acid.”
Their Oscar stunt may have cost them their next film nominations
Parker and Stone didn’t make another film until 2004, Team America: World Police. While South Park was animated, Team America used puppet shows. This time they took aim at action movies and political activist celebrities. While not a musical (the characters don’t sing), the soundtrack still included some classics by Trey Parker. Parker didn’t expect a second nomination.
“I think we’re just not really welcome there anymore,” Parker said. “I think that was before Team America. When we wore the dresses there, there were Academy members who were super unhappy with it. So we weren’t really expecting a nomination.”
South Park won several other Emmys, however. Parker and Stone also got a lot more love when they created the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. They wore suits to the Tony Awards.
