Ina Garten makes flawless salmon in just minutes using a failsafe cooking technique, then serves it with excellent savory lentils for a great summer supper. The Barefoot Contessa celebrity offered some cooking advice for the simple recipe.

Garten initially described on the Barefoot Contessa cooking show how to create her salmon with lentils recipe that it can be scaled out to feed a crowd or down to a great evening for two.

“Salmon with lentils is a terrific party dish because you can cook it in large batches, but it also works well for two,” she noted.

Garten started by covering the lentils in a basin with boiling water and letting them sit for 10 minutes to soften. While they soaked, she sautéed the onions, leeks, thyme, salt, and pepper in olive oil in a skillet over medium heat for 10 minutes. She added the garlic and cooked it for a few minutes more before adding the carrots and celery.

Onions and leeks are “very much in the same family,” according to Garten, “although the leeks are a little more delicate than the onions.” They work well together.”

The quick veggie combo “is pretty chunky” and has “plenty of flavor — and the lentils are simply part of it,” according to the Barefoot Contessa star.

She simmered the mixture for 20 minutes after adding chicken stock, tomato paste, and lentils.
