The story of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, best known as Joe Exotic, is told in Netflix’s Tiger King: Murder, Madness, and Mayhem. The seven-part docuseries featured several people who were involved in Maldonado-story, Passage’s including Rick Kirkham, the legendary reality television producer.

Kirkham teamed up with Maldonado-Passage, a well-known producer, in the hopes of creating a reality show about the “Tiger King.” Kirkham took up residence at the G.W. Zoo in Maldonado-Passage, where he experienced all of the craziness.

Kirkham had a wildly promising career as a reality television star before searching out big cat lover Maldonado-Passage.

Kirkham got his first camera when he was 14 years old, according to an ABC News profile. He would later use that camera to record “a video diary of [his]life in which he spoke candidly about his addiction, remorse, and the love of his two sons, which would eventually save him from self-destruction.”

Kirkham was a dancer on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand before becoming addicted to drugs.

Kirkham graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1981, according to his LinkedIn profile. Later, he worked for an NBC affiliate in Las Vegas as a crime reporter.

Kirkham’s career as a crime reporter propelled him into the limelight. Kirkham got to carry a badge and wear a bulletproof vest when accompanying cops on drug busts. Kirkham, ironically, developed a crack addiction during this period.

Kirkham went on to work for Inside Edition, where he gained a reputation for his ability to take risks including setting himself on fire (as seen in Tiger King). Kirkham was fired from Inside Edition in 1996 due to his addiction.

Rick Kirkham tried to commit suicide.

Kirkham lost his job, his family, and almost his life when he lost his job.
