Marvel fans received a major surprise this week as Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier and Ian McKellan’s Magneto made their return in a newly released teaser for Avengers: Doomsday.

The minute-long preview, released on Tuesday, also features James Marsden reprising his role as Cyclops, reuniting three of the most iconic characters from the original X-Men film franchise. Stewart, McKellan, and Marsden first appeared together in the early 2000s and have since become closely associated with their legendary roles in the superhero genre.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, and it is shaping up to be one of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious crossover projects to date.

In addition to the return of the X-Men veterans, Marvel has already confirmed several major cast members. Chris Evans will once again appear as Steve Rogers, while Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, however, is Robert Downey Jr.’s new role in the Marvel universe. After portraying Iron Man for more than a decade, Downey will now take on the role of the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, marking a dramatic shift from hero to antagonist.

The teaser has already sparked widespread discussion among fans, who are eager to see how Marvel will bring together characters from different eras and franchises into a single storyline. While Marvel Studios has not yet revealed full plot details, the return of these legendary figures suggests that Avengers: Doomsday will be a major event film for the studio.

According to reports published by U.S. media outlets, the film is expected to play a key role in shaping the future direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When will Avengers: Doomsday be released?

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters Dec. 18, 2026.

Avengers: Secret Wars will follow a year later on Dec. 17, 2027.
