Over the past few years, Paris Hilton has taken a lot of criticism for the white “Stop Being Poor” shirt she wore. But, it turns out that Hilton never actually wore a shirt that said that. The heiress told her followers on TikTok that someone Photoshopped it. In a new video, she explains how people got it all wrong and finally sets the truth straight for all her followers and fans.

Having risen to fame in the 2000s, Paris Hilton is the heiress to the Hilton empire.

In fact, Hilton was born on February 17, 1981 in New York City. She was born into extreme wealth as the heiress of her grandfather Conrad Hilton’s Hilton Hotels business empire. Her net worth is reportedly around $300 million.

Growing up, Hilton pursued modeling and a more public lifestyle. The star enjoyed her celebrity by partying and dating other famous women. Her crew included Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie. And her early friendship with Kim Kardashian West also helped catapult the multi-hyphenate into fame.

Starring in “The Simple Life,” she portrayed a “dumb blonde.”

Hilton stepped even further into the spotlight in her reality show “The Simple Life” with Richie. The two lived in Arkansas for a month and learned all about normal country life.

In the show, which first aired in 2003, Hilton took on the persona of a ditzy, clueless blonde. Hilton maintains nearly two decades later that her on-screen persona was intentional.

“I built a persona,” she told Vanity Fair. “I’m not a dumb blonde, I’m just very good at pretending to be someone else.”

The star continued, “I always knew exactly what I was doing.”

Something Hilton couldn’t control, however, was the spread of a picture of her. In it, she was apparently wearing a shirt that read, “Stop Being Poor.” The picture showed Hilton with her arms raised and smiling. She combined her white shirt with a long pink skirt. The message of her shirt was met with disapproval by many people who were not born into wealth.

After the image was seen by many online, Hilton finally addressed the shirt herself. On May 3, she uploaded a TikTok to explain what the shirt was really saying.

“So there’s this picture of me online,” she began, “I’m sure you guys have seen it. I never wore this shirt. It’s completely photoshopped. Everyone thinks it’s real. But that’s not the truth. That’s what it really said: ‘Stop being desperate.’ Don’t believe everything you read.”

Hilton’s caption read, “Debunk the #STOPBEINGPOOR myth. Don’t believe everything you read.”

Her TikTok explainer video has more than 5 million views. The star, who has more than 4.5 million TikTok followers, uses the social media app to showcase her fun and smart personality. She also includes clips of herself and her fiancé, venture capitalist Carter Reum, in her videos.
