Gareth Southgate claims Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson is fit and sends a message to Andy Robertson.
Gareth Southgate has defended his choice to include Jordan Henderson in England’s Euro 2020 squad, despite the Liverpool captain’s involvement being questioned.
The 31-year-old made his comeback from injury, following groin surgery in February, the week before in England’s last warm-up game against Romania, and was an unused substitute as the Three Lions opened the tournament with a 1-0 triumph over Croatia.
Several analysts had criticized the midfielder for not withdrawing from the squad before to the commencement of the European Championships, with Roy Keane and Gabby Agbonlahor being particularly harsh on the Reds captain.
When justifying Henderson’s inclusion, Southgate retaliated by revealing how vital Henderson is to his squad behind the scenes.
He told reporters, “With a 26-man team, we were able to take a little bit more of a risk with Hendo.” “Those selections were made easier since the repercussions of fielding guys who weren’t match-ready for the first two of games were less severe than if you only had 23 players.
“We had some decent backup in that part of the pitch, but the risk of not taking Hendo was so high that we decided to give him a chance to make it. We’ve obviously got Jude (Bellingham) and Kalvin come through, which has been a huge help (Phillips).
“We’ll never know what judgments we would have made if we had 23 because that was not the reality we were working with,” says the author.
“What he contributes to the group on the training pitch, what he brings to the camp, his experience, the way he can communicate to some of the other players in those quiet moments when you’re in and about the hotel,” he said.
“In the way he exercises and approaches his profession, he reminds me of Harry (Kane).” It’s a huge plus for us that he’s part of the team.”
Southgate also provided an update on Henderson’s fitness, stating that he is on the verge of being fit to play for his country.
“He is now working on a regular basis and is getting closer. The summary comes to a close.
