Liz warned Red that if he killed Katarina, she’d be “done” with him, and she held to her guns during season 8.

“What Red can’t stand is someone he can’t trust knowing those secrets he won’t reveal,” Eisendrath explained. “Once Dom (Brian Dennehy) told Katarina those truths, everything changed. Suddenly, killing her was worth the damage it would do to his relationship with Liz.”
